How to Document Your Architecture Work
Your portfolio doesn't just show your final projects. It can also show how your ideas developed. That's why it's important to document your work while you're creating it, rather than trying to remember everything later.
Save Your Process
Keep important parts of your project as you work:
- Initial sketches and ideas
- Research and inspiration
- Design changes
- Models and experiments
- Final drawings and renderings
You won't necessarily use everything, but saving it gives you options later.
Take Photos Along the Way
If you're creating a physical model, drawing, or working on a project, take photos throughout the process.
For the best results:
- Use good lighting
- Keep the image clear and in focus
- Avoid distracting backgrounds
- Photograph models from different angles when helpful
You don't need a professional camera. Your phone is enough.
Stay Organized
Create a folder for each project and separate it into sections such as:
Sketches | Research | Process | Final Work
Give your files clear names instead of leaving them as random camera or download names.
Staying organized now will save you a lot of time when you're ready to build your portfolio.
Don't Delete the Mistakes
If an idea didn't work, don't automatically throw it away.
Showing how you changed your design can demonstrate problem-solving and growth. Keep earlier versions so you can show:
Original idea → Problem → Change → Final design
Write Down Your Thinking
While the project is still fresh, write a few notes about what you were trying to accomplish, what inspired you, and what you changed.
You don't need a long explanation. A few sentences can be enough.
